It’s hard to describe life & learning at Historically Black Colleges & Universities; you have to experience it yourself.

Take The HBCU Tour

The American South holds the stories of our country’s Black history, and many of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities began right there in the midst of it. Visiting these campuses does more than enlighten, it fosters a sense of pride in Black Excellence that can change the life of a young person, no matter their race. We know, because we experienced it!

But there’s a problem: Cedar Valley students are hours (often many hours!) from the closest HBCUs, so they’re forced to learn about them by scrolling through pictures online or reading a glossy brochure. We believe that our students deserve to experience these sacred places up close and in person—to walk the halls where the Greats got their start. Because it’s hard to be what you’ve never seen.

That’s why we crafted a college tour just for our students. The itinerary gives young people an opportunity to immerse themselves in Black history, tour a selection of HBCUs, and expand their vision of what could be.

You don't want to miss this.

Historically Black Colleges & Universities
(a definition)

As far back as the 19th century, and then well into the Civil Rights era, colleges started by Black Americans were often the only path to higher education for Black students. There are over 100 of these universities still in existence today, and these HBCUs continue to benefit their predominantly Black student bodies by offering lower tuition rates, a strong sense of community, and a robust academic education.

In fact, over 75% of Black professionals in the U.S. graduated from one of these universities, including Civil Rights Activist and US Representative John Lewis, NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, and author and poet Langston Hughes.

Hi, we’re Shaffer & Madelyn Ridgeway,

As high school students, we were both lucky to have mentors who introduced us to HBCUs, or as we like to say, higher education that felt like it was made just for us.

Now, it’s our mission to offer the same introduction to the budding leaders within our reach.

OUR BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE
K
L

We served in our church as youth leaders early in our marriage, and we had the opportunity to travel with a group of young people to Branson, MO every year. From this experience, we learned the joys (and tricks!) of leading successful learning experiences for kids.

Madelyn Ridgeway graduated from Alabama A&M University, an HBCU school, with a master's degree in Family & Consumer Sciences. She was the founding coordinator of LifeLabs, a service-based program unique to Waterloo Schools. Madelyn also coaches students and adults in personal branding, etiquette and networking skills, and works with a community-based organization, 24/7 BLAC.

Madelyn met her husband, Shaffer, during her time at Alabama A&M, where she learned his unique story of attending an HBCU.

Shaffer Ridgeway was raised in a rural Alabama town. It was always assumed by many that he would graduate and work in the local paper mill, just like his father had at one time.

While he was in high school, his ag teacher encouraged Shaffer's interest in agriculture, and he introduced the possibility of attending college at Alabama A&M.

Shaffer's teacher arranged a college visit to an HBCU school, and for the first time, he could clearly picture a future beyond the paper mill.

Shaffer became the first in his family to graduate from a university. (This is the power of exposure!) He attended Alabama A&M University and earned a degree in Agribusiness and an internship with the USDA, which resulted in a fulfilling agricultural career.

He and Madelyn now live in Iowa with their three children.

BREAK THROUGH BARRIERS

Embracing exploration is forever.

We are always identifying ways to remove barriers for HBCU-exploring students, like recruitment fairs and credit transfer agreements with local colleges. Above all, we hope to inspire students to never stop exploring what’s beyond their view.

Explore the 2026 itinerary.

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice & The Legacy Museum

Located in Montgomery, Alabama, thes sites offer a powerful and essential historic experience. Together, these sites share the racial history of the South while honoring the lives impacted and highlighting the ongoing pursuit of justice. This visit provides students with critical historical context, reflection, and a deeper understanding of how the past shapes present-day equity, leadership, and responsibility.

Daily Mentorship & Debriefing

Each day brings more learning opportunities, so we meet each evening to discuss our experiences. While the college tours are the focus of our trip, we pack our days with activities that may be new to participants—beach days, civil rights landmarks, and more! Many of our students have been in the minority. Here, they are so much more.

Practical Assessment to Process Your Experience

During their time at Future Prep Academy, students develop a list of their college requirements and priorities. During the HBCU Tour, they update their lists and consider how each school could best meet their needs. We know that an HBCU school may not be the best fit for every student, but we love showing them what is possible!

There are 20-24 spots available. If you complete the Future Prep Academy, you will be invited to apply!

You might still bewondering...

How much does it cost?
K
L

Our HBCU tour costs about $1500-$2000 per student, but we have lowered this cost to a small deposit of $200-$250 per student through grants and generous donations. If they wish, students are given the opportunity to earn their deposit through various fundraising activities or make installment payments over time. A portion of each deposit is returned to the student to purchase college merch from their favorite university while on their trip!

Will I have to miss school?
K
L

Students typically only miss two days of school! We try to plan our tour for the week of Waterloo School's parent-teacher conferences so we can take advantage of the long weekend and spend six days exploring as many colleges as we can. We have arranged for our students to take their Chromebooks along so they have the option of using some downtime to catch up on any makeup work they might have.

Am I eligible to participate?
K
L

This tour is open to any student, of any race, in the Cedar Valley/Blackhawk County area who has completed our Future Prep Academy course. Limited seats are available, so we require an application process for participation.

Who is chaperoning the trip?
K
L

The trip is chaperoned by the founders, Madelyn and Shaffer Ridgeway, along with another male/female team, Aysha Weekley and Tim Hopper, a teacher in the Waterloo School District. All chaperones have been background-checked and have experience working with students. Each leader has been inspired by someone in their own life who gave them the opportunity to experience a similar opportunity.

How many students attend?
K
L

We are able to accommodate around 25 students on each trip.

How do we get there?
K
L

How we get to our destination is determined trip by trip. To maximize student exposure, we visit HBCUs in different states each year. We typically travel by charter bus, but we will catch a flight if a long bus ride means less time on college campuses and sites!

Where do we stay?
K
L

We take great care in vetting the location for each night's stay. Our hotels are typically 3-star hotels located in the safest parts of the community we're visiting.

How are the colleges we visit selected?
K
L

There are over 100 HBCUs in the United States. We try to visit a variety of colleges, and each year we choose different schools so that students who attend multiple years can experience more options.

What happens after the trip?
K
L

We work with students to assist whenever needed—scholarship letters of recommendation, applications, vetting schools, or personal connections. We're in the trenches with families, offering whatever assistance we can.

I went last year! Can I go again?
K
L

We would love for you to experience as many college visits as you can, however, to make sure we have the greatest exposure for the greatest number of students, we do limit students to *two (2) years on the tour. You choose what two years you apply as long as you're in grades 10th-12th.

There will be a small required deposit, around $300, each time you join the tour.

*In certain cases, exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.

Have another question? Reach out.

The power of one experience.

Many students in Blackhawk County are considered minorities for one reason or another. Visiting an HBCU school opens their eyes to a world outside their current reach—a chance to explore what it would be like to launch from a place where they are seen and understood for who they are. Fully, without restraint.

Whether you’re a student or an advocate, we want to know you.
